Pre-kindergarten Program
Experiences Every Step of the Way
At Emerson Academy, our Pre-Kindergarten class (Fireflies) prepares children for future learning by providing a foundation and an early love of learning, socialization, and fun! The Firefly class is Emerson Academy’s last class before children enter Kindergarten in the Fall. The teachers focus on individualized math and reading objectives during one-on-one and small group instruction, while socialization and communication are promoted throughout the day. In addition to our research-based curriculum, the Firefly teachers enrich student learning through sight words, advanced math skills, science experiments, and cultural education through our “Learning Around the World” program.
Our Curriculum: The Creative Curriculum® for Pre-Kindergarten
Emerson Academy utilizes The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool, a comprehensive, research-based curriculum, which features exploration and discovery as a way of learning, enabling children to develop confidence, creativity, and lifelong critical-thinking skills. This curriculum was chosen because it focuses on the skills and knowledge that are most important for helping your child to be successful in school.
The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool is based on 38 objectives for development and learning that focus on all of the areas that are most important for school success. Throughout the year, our curriculum helps teachers plan learning experiences that are just right for your child so that they can make progress at their own pace.
Enrichment Activities
In addition to a variety of classroom activities, Pre-K students at Emerson Academy have weekly music classes taught by Amber Sarpy, a licensed music therapist. Ms. Amber creates lessons with Music/Movement/Art to focus on communication (verbal and nonverbal), empathy, grounding and self-regulation, compliance and following directions. Ms. Amber also teaches an optional weekly bilingual Spanish-English music-based class that teaches basic Spanish vocabulary through songs, movement, stories, and art.
Our Dragonfly class participates in the Junior Master Gardener (JMG) program every Thursday with volunteers from the local Master Gardener Club. JMG engages children in novel, “hands-on” group and individual learning experiences that provide a love of gardening, develop an appreciation for the environment and cultivate the mind.
